Based on interviews conducted throughout Australia, Dear Ida is a verbatim performance providing contemporary audiences with a unique insight into the pivotal role that Australian WWII social dancehalls played in maintaining cohesion and wellbeing on Australian wartime home-front. For many, the dances offered a plethora of sensual pleasures and “were everything”. At the dances you could lose yourself and find a brief reprieve from the unrelenting tensions and grief brought by war. Using universal themes, Dear Ida appeals to all and offers an opportunity to understand the profound healing impact of dance in a time of trauma.
