The Poetry of My Generation
La Mama Poetica July features Dom Symes, author of ‘I saw the best memes of my generation’ (Recent Work Press, 2022) and emerging poet Lesh Karan, recently shortlisted in the 2022 Judith Wright Poetry Prize. Eva Collins charts her family’s journey from Poland to Australia during the Cold War in ‘Ask No Questions’ (Puncher & Wattmann, 2022). We also present Juan Garrido Salgado, who fled Chile and the regime that burned his poetry in 1990, and is the author of eight poetry collections including ‘When I Was Clandestine’ (Rochford Press, 2019) and ‘Hope Blossoming’ (Puncher & Wattmann, 2020).

Poets:
Lesh Karan/ लेश करण is a Naarm/Melbourne-based poet and essayist of Fijian Indian heritage. Her poems have recently been published in Admissions, Red Room Poetry anthology, Best of Australian Poems 2022, Island, Mascara Literary Review and Rabbit, among other places. She was shortlisted for the 2022 Judith Wright Poetry Prize and is currently completing a Master of Creative Writing, Publishing and Editing at The University of Melbourne.
Dominic Symes lives and writes quietly on unceded Wurundjeri country. His poetry has appeared in Overland, Cordite, Rabbit, Australian Book Review, Australian Poetry Journal and Best of Australian Poems 2021. He helps curate NO WAVE, a monthly poetry reading series on unceded Kaurna Country where he grew up. His first collection of poetry, ‘I saw the best memes of my generation’ (2022) is published by Recent Work Press.
Juan Garrido Salgado has lived in Australia since 1990 and has published 8 books of poetry in Australia and Chile. His most recent collections are ‘When I was Clandestine’ (Rochford Press, 2019), ‘Hope Blossoming in their Ink’ (Puncher & Wattmann 2020) and the upcoming ‘The Dilemma of Writing Poem’ (Puncher & Wattmann, 2023). Juan has translated works by Australian and Aboriginal poets into Spanish, and his work has been widely translated into several languages.
Eva Collins is a Polish-born writer, short filmmaker and photographer. Her poems have appeared in The Best Australian Poems, Quadrant, Southerly, Westerly, Cordite Review and the Newcastle Poetry Prize Anthology.In 2022, Puncher & Wattmann published her verse memoir, ‘Ask No Questions’. Eva is currently working on a sequel to this book, exploring themes of dislocation, otherness and nostalgia. Curiosity drives her practice as she is drawn to unexpected scenes of contrast or discord which evoke excitement and a sense of discovery.
