A thought-provoking play that delves into the experiences of Iranian women; shining a floodlight on the momentous events that have unfolded within the Iranian Women’s Movement since September 2022. This movement has transcended geographical boundaries, gaining global recognition and evoking empathy far beyond our homeland’s borders.
This play combines poetic and allegorical perspectives to reveal the injustices faced by women in Iran. At its core, this production is a tribute to the indomitable spirit and unwavering courage of Iranian women as they continue to navigate a system of gender apartheid.
I had seen its poster somewhere. I heard that they come from Melbourne and have staged their show in several cities in Australia. The show is a monologue which puts a high amount of responsibility on the shoulders of its actor. In a monologue, the play itself must have the necessary attraction and the actor must be able to enchant the audience. This play shows Mohammad Rezaei Rad’s in-depth understanding of drama and reassures the audience that he feels the pulse of the times.
In the text, the dual functions of symbols and allusions are abundant. Fortunately, this has been captured in the directing of Ehsan Bayatfar. The subtleties of the mise-en-scène and sound design are impressive, and so is the way the actor is directed. This show disrupts the traditional notion of the fragile female stereotype and reveals the hidden power of its female protagonist. She embodies the notion of women, life, and their lack of freedom, with her immortality being the least of her contributions to this world.
