Venue Information

La Mama HQ, at 205 Faraday Street, has been an important part of the Melbourne theatre scene since 1967. In 2017 we celebrated fifty years in the iconic double-storey red brick building. Sadly, just one year later, the theatre was gutted by fire. It took three and a half years, but with much support we have now rebuilt, and are welcoming artists and guests once more, now into a fully accessible space.

Getting to La Mama HQ

La Mama HQ is located at 205 Faraday Street, Carlton, set back from the street and nestled between Grill’d and Shakahari restaurants. 

Finding parking near La Mama can be very difficult, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, so if you need to drive, make sure you allow plenty of time to find a park.

If you ride a bike, you’ll find plenty of bicycle parking on the forecourt of little La Mama. The closest Melbourne Bike Share station is at Argyle Square on Lygon St, south of La Mama. Buy a helmet from the 7-Eleven on Lygon St along the way.

Accessibility

As part of the rebuild process, it was extremely important to everyone in the La Mama family that the new buildings be entirely accessible. This means that we are wheelchair accessible for both audience and artists. However, the building is Heritage listed which means there are some things that are outside of our control. The doorway to the theatre is approximately 1 metre wide. 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, 72 Stop #1 Melbourne University / Swanston St Walk east along Faraday. La Mama will be on your right. (5 mins)

Buses

200, 207 Lygon St / Elgin St Walk Walk East on Faraday St. La Mama will be on your right (2 mins)  
250, 251 Elgin St / Rathdowne St Walk South along Rathdowne St and turn right on to Faraday St, it will be on your right (5 mins)

Melbourne Central Station, followed by a tram or bus ride above
