La Mama’s 2025 Residencies
In 2025, La Mama will temporarily pause our regular programming to concentrate on strengthening our operations. This review will ensure that we continue to be viable, sustainable, and relevant in the years ahead.
During this period, we remain committed to supporting independent artists through our 2025 Residency Program. These two-week residencies, held at either HQ or the Courthouse, will provide artists with the space to progress work, develop ideas and play. While public performance seasons are not part of the program, each residency is required to culminate in an showing of the work developed.
We invite independent artists and collectives to submit an Expression of Interest.
2025 Residency applications are now closed. Applicants will be notified of outcomes by 18th December.
Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:
- How does the work stand out as contemporary, urgent, ambitious, or original?
- Does it tell a new/untold story, offer a fresh perspective, and/or champion underrepresented voices?
- Is the craft of the work evident? Is it clear, accessible, and rigorous in its dramaturgy?
- Is the work impactful as a piece of art? Does it effectively use form, imagery, metaphor, or genre to convey its message?
- Does it align with La Mama’s Mission and Values? (see below)
Further details:
- Resident artists will have access to one of La Mama’s spaces to work autonomously. Access to La Mama staff support will be limited.
- All artists must adhere to La Mama’s Code of Conduct.
- Artists are responsible to manage scheduling and any budget or fees themselves.
- There will be no capacity for artists to raise funds or sell tickets as part of the Residencies.
- Artists will be covered by La Mama’s Public Liability insurance (we recommend groups obtain additional Personal and Contents insurance)
- EOIs will be assessed by an external Programming Board and ratified by La Mama staff.
La Mama’s Mission & Values
Australia’s home for raw, radical and relevant theatre
La Mama is Australia’s home for raw, radical and relevant theatre; it creates a community where artists thrive, audiences connect and society prospers.
Our mission is to empower artists, audiences and theatre-making. We do this with a belief and commitment to: complete artistic freedom; the healing power of art; amplifying less powerful voices; the potency of an intimate, personal experience and ensuring the future funding and freedom of Australian stories.
