D. H. Lawrence, Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling all visited Lorne between 1894 and 1923. They meet in the ballroom of the Pacific Hotel, along with Lawrence’s wife Frieda, Twain’s daughter Suzy and Kipling’s fiancée Carrie. They’re astonished to somehow have arrived here at the bottom of the world and to find themselves in such a strangely confronting land. They proceed to share their fear of this foreign-ness, but it’s the women’s intuition that crucially expands the writers’ awareness.
