An ode to Mother: nature, love, longing, and loss.
Poetry, live music, song, and story.
Zikra (meaning ‘memory’ in Arabic) gathers cherished and disparate strands of enchanting music and poetry from the Middle East, weaving them into a contemporary tapestry of the diasporic experience. This new fabric blends nostalgia and discovery with themes of love, nature, longing, and loss.
Evocative texts in dialects of Arabic and Farsi tell stories rich in metaphor, as relevant today as they have been for hundreds of years. Discover the mesmerising sounds of iconic Middle Eastern women, such as Googoosh and Fairuz, hear personal tales of poet and singer Gabriela Georges (a 2nd generation Syrian-Australian), and enchanting arrangements of iconic Middle Eastern repertoire.
Performed by Zikra – Gabriela Georges (vocals, poetry), Tony Pain (guitar, musical direction), Ariel Valent (accordion, keyboard, percussion), Ben Harmsen (bass guitar)
