La Mama History: The Water Closet

The new water closets deliver greatly improved facilities and accessibility to the rebuilt La Mama. They also provide 3 new spaces, albeit rather small, to exhibit and engage with art. These magical escape spaces, or private little galleries, have been designed to house commissioned works. Some pieces are permanent, and others are on a rolling commission.

Visit the new accessible toilet, behind the box office, to view the inaugural artwork by James Clayden.

Visit the little dunny downstairs to view a sink and stand created by James Clayden and Peter Hughes. This permanent installation uses a bluestone discovered under the theatre floor

Photos of graffiti from the old water closets by Glenn Hester can be found throughout all bathrooms.
