Holy Mothers (Die Präsidentinnen)

An Australian premiere

Supported by the Austrian Embassy & the Goethe-Institut

Holy Mothers signalled the meteoric rise to fame of the “Austrian Fassbinder” Werner Schwab. The play rips apart the values behind family and religion and transports us into the grotesque world of three retired cleaning ladies.

“Life consumes whatever it wants. It can bring you a hard stool one day and a soft one the next. And whatever kind of stool life brings to you, well that’s providence, and there’s nothing you can do about it. So be a brave girl, and wait… till it’s over.”

These abused creatures transcend the banalities of their daily existence by conjuring up an emotionally charged escape world.

Schwab emerges as a more jovial Thomas Bernhard: his target is clearly self-delusion, Catholicism and, in a shockingly violent climax, the capacity for burying inconvenient facts.
