LA MAMA POETICA

La Mama Poetica is a night of some of the best spoken word and poetry that Melbourne has to offer, with a diverse selection of both emerging and established poets. La Mama Poetica is curated and hosted by Amanda Anastasi.

 Tuesday, 14th August at the La Mama Courthouse Theatre, 349 Drummond St, Carlton at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

BETH SPENCER’s most recent books are the verse memoir ‘Vagabondage’ (UWAP) and a bilingual collection, ‘The Party of Life’ (Flying Islands/ASM). She was awarded The Age Short Story Prize, the inaugural Dinny O’Hearn Fellowship, several Literature Board grants and was runner-up for the Steele Rudd Prize for ‘How to Conceive of a Girl’ (Vintage/Random House). She writes across genres and forms, and her ABC radio pieces have been collected on the double-CD ‘Body of Words’. She is currently writing a memoir in fragments (poetry and text) about inner-city Sydney in the 1980s. She lives on the Central Coast of NSW.

PHILLIP HALL is a poet and essayist who has worked for many years as a teacher of outdoor education and sport throughout regional NSW, Northern Qld, and the Northern Territory. He now resides in Melbourne’s Sunshine where he is a passionate member of the Western Bulldogs Football Club. His publications include ‘Sweetender in Coals, Borroloola Class’, and (as editor) ‘Diwurruwurru:Poetry from the Gulf of Carpentaria’. He has been published in Best Australian Poems and numerous literary journals. His recent collection is ‘Fume’ (UWAP).

QUINN EADES is a researcher, writer, and award-winning poet whose work lies at the nexus of trans, queer and feminist theories of the body, autobiography, and philosophy. Eades is published nationally and internationally and is the author of ‘all the beginnings: a queer autobiography of the body’, and ‘Rallying’. He is the winner of the 2018 Mary Gilmore Award for his collection ‘Rallying’ and the 2017 Arts Queensland XYZ Award for Innovation in Spoken Word. Quinn is currently working on a book-length collection of fragments and a related theatre show written from the transitioning body, titled ‘Transpositions’.

Critically-acclaimed spoken word artist and obsessive-compulsive diva AMY BODOSSIAN is an eccentric and unforgettable performer who’s been captivating audiences for over 10 years with her unique performances. She’s appeared on ABC’s ‘Spicks and Specks’ and ‘’Please Like Me, performed at major festivals across Australia, and headlined most of Melbourne’s top poetry events. She’s been nominated for a Green Room Award and won the Convenor’s Choice Award in the 2017 Melbourne Spoken Word Prize.
