LA MAMA MUSICA
La Mama Musica is one of Melbourne’s longest running music nights, in operation since 1969. These days it is a curated monthly concert series showcasing creative music, improvising musicians and sound-artists at La Mama’s Theatre and Courthouse venues. The intimate settings and fabulous acoustics of La Mama’s two historic theatres allows fine musicians to perform in a very special environment, amidst the set of the current theatre production – so improvisation and flexibility of presentation is also part of our process.
The series has been organised by the curatorial team of Annabel Warmington and Adrian Sherriff for more than a dozen years. They encourage unusual collaborations, and ask the programmed artists to explore or develop something new in their work – giving each event a special air of excitement for both the artists and audience alike.
This months La Mama Musica will have performances by ADRIAN SHERRIFF; ELISSA GOODRICH & TAMARA MURPHY
MUSICAL LABYRINTHS by ADRIAN SHERRIFF
Adrian’s solo polyglottal exploration of multi-layered musical challenges through time, space and culture, via instrumentation from Europe virtual pipe organ, bass trombone, Bali gender wayang, virtual gender wayang, Cuba bata, India mridangam and Japan shakuhachi.
GENE TREE: LISTEN.NOW.AGAIN
By ELISSA GOODRICH and TAMARA MURPHY
Tamara Murphy (double bass) and Elissa Goodrich (vibraphone) perform contemporary classical-jazz-improvisational music from Elissa’s current composition project ‘Gene Tree: Listen.Now.Again.’, which draws on climate change science and evolutionary biology to explore new, improvised music.
This project began with a residency in 2016 between Elissa, evolutionary biologist Dr Anna Syme and dramaturg, Nadja Kostich. The project is now growing towards a major presentation / installation with St Martin’s Youth Performing Arts Centre and the Gene Tree Project ensemble in 2020. www.genetreeproject.com
