LA MAMA MUSICA

La Mama Musica is one of Melbourne’s longest running music nights, in operation since 1969. These days it is a curated monthly concert series showcasing creative music, improvising musicians and sound-artists at La Mama’s Theatre and Courthouse venues. The intimate settings and fabulous acoustics of La Mama’s two historic theatres allows fine musicians to perform in a very special environment, amidst the set of the current theatre production – so improvisation and flexibility of presentation is also part of our process.

The series has been organised by the curatorial team of Annabel Warmington and Adrian Sherriff for more than a dozen years. They encourage unusual collaborations, and ask the programmed artists to explore or develop something new in their work – giving each event a special air of excitement for both the artists and audience alike.

“Memento Memori: A Malaysian Circus on The Garden of Evening Mists” (2013)
Event structure by John Cage. Source text by Tan Twan Eng.

Realization by Warren Burt and Catherine Schieve.

Commissioned by Andrew Blackburn for “John Cage 101” at Sultan Idris University,

Tanjung Malim, Malaysia, 2013.
This version will be performed by four of the principal original performers of that event.

The structure by John Cage (“________, a ________ Circus on _______”), is
applied to a novel by Tan Twan Eng (“The Garden of Evening Mists”), and
realized into a composition for environmental sounds, images, spoken word
poetry, and live musicians. Environmental sounds from places all over
Malaysia, mentioned in the novel “The Garden of Evening Mists,” were
collected by Catherine Schieve, and faculty and students from Sultan Idris
University Department of Music in July and August 2013, and mixed into a
large sound collage by Warren Burt, in September 2013.  Photographs of
Malaysia taken by Catherine Schieve in July – September 2013, arranged
into a slide show.  The text of the novel is transformed into “Mesostics”
(John Cage’s preferred poetic form), which are read by two readers
throughout the piece.  Music mentioned in the novel and also from the
areas the novel occurred in, are also played during the performance.
