La Mama Learning seeks to actively engage audiences, students, educators and artists alike in the process of critical thinking and practical investigation as it relates to contemporary performance. Show forums, work experience, tertiary-level internships and online interaction through the La Mama website also seek the active engagement of curious participants and combine to flesh out the La Mama Learning programme.

Students take a bow at La Mama Courthouse

The spirit of community theatre was in full force at La Mama Courthouse on 24th and 25th October, when students from the Sydney Road Community School in Brunswick proudly presented The Way Out: A Masterpiece by a Dead Goblin.

Written and performed by the students through the Schools Project initiative, The Way Out was developed with funding from Arts Victoria, in conjunction with La Mama Theatre. Over two terms, students worked with writer Barry Dickins and devisor & director Caitlin Dullard, producing written pieces, participating in workshops and coming together in small groups and as a whole cast.

The end result was a piece of theatre which captured “the talent, interests and creative soul of the individuals who make up this very unique school”, says Dullard. She enjoyed the challenge of working with such a diverse range of students and reading their “inspiring words”, and the audience of staff, family members and friends who attended the production were very proud of what the students of Sydney Road Community School had achieved.

It was the first time that La Mama had been involved with the Schools Project, and the theatre looks forward to the opportunity to participate in this initiative again in the future.
