Development Coordinator – Mary Helen Sassman

Mary Helen Sassman started working at La Mama as an intern in 1998.

She was fresh out of studying Performance Studies at Victoria University and she thought La Mama might provide her with some tools to navigate employment in the arts. What she actually discovered, like so many others, was that La Mama instead offered something far more valuable – a warm embrace in the heartland of independent theatre in Melbourne.

Since interning in 1998, Mary Helen has taken on many roles including book keeping, assistant to the Artistic Director, maybe a fill in house manager for a day or two, community coordinator and now her current role on the Marketing team.  She took leave at various times to work as an artist and volunteer in East Timor and to give birth three times.

Mary Helen also acts and sings and will one day include a link to a really great website for any interested parties. In 2014 Mary Helen performed the role Greta in the Second Cousin’s META as part of Malthouse Theatre’s Helium season; Dr Frankenstein in the Rabble’s Frankenstein for Malthouse theatre; Abel in the Rabble’s Cain and Abel for Belvoir Theatre; Queen Elizabeth 1 and Sasha in the Rabble’s Orlando for Brisbane Festival; and Eva in Tatiana Doroshenko’s film Earth.
